The buying process follows much the same path across the country but because of the demand for inner-city properties, the process is vastly accelerated in desirable locations. Generally, the seller will advertise their property through an estate agent/realtor (mäklaren). Many agents advertise the properties listed with them on Hemnet so it worth looking on this website. There are also a number of local websites that list properties so ask local agents where they list property. Local papers also have supplements with properties listed and often there are hand-outs of these delivered to all properties in the area and available from the agents. At the very least, this will give you an indication of agents that are active in the area but may also throw up some interesting properties. However, not all property will be listed in the papers so it is worth contacting the agents direct. Agencies may not be as forceful as you’re used to – the emphasis is on you chasing them rather than them chasing you so be prepared to call them regularly for updates and ask whether they have listed any more properties that meet your requirements.
The agent is responsible for arranging viewings of properties so contact them whenever you find a property you like the look of. If a property is likely to generate a lot of interest, the agent will probably arrange some ‘open viewings’ to which anybody who wants to see the property is invited. The number of people attending the open viewing may give you an indication of the level of interest but don’t be deterred if it seems like there are hundreds of people there – most will probably decide they’re not interested anyway and some just like going to open viewings or want to compare what is available in the area.
