Children aged between 3 and 19 are expected to visit the dentist every two years unless the state of their teeth dictates more regular check-ups. Reminders will be sent out automatically, along with details of how to choose a dentist or how to switch between dentists if you wish. You can switch dentists at every reminder – every two years – if you are dissatisfied or stay with the one you trust.
If you choose a private dentist, you will be sent a dental care certificate (tandvårdsbevis) which allows the dentist to reclaim the cost of treatment directly from social security. This will be reissued automatically every two years unless you decide to switch to the public dental system and notify the dental authority (tandvårdsenheten) accordingly.
Each region has its own dental authority and although it is not easy to find information on them it is possible to turn to them if you have questions or issues regarding your rights to children’s dentistry.
Most of the cost of treatment is also paid for by the social system but if you choose to have a more expensive option – for example, porcelain fillings instead of the standard composite – you will need to pay for it.
If your children need treatment to straighten their teeth, they may be offered orthadontic treatment in which case your local “landsting” will foot the bill. Otherwise a number of specialist dentists exist. Discuss this with your regular dentist to see whether they can handle it or who they recommend and how much the treatment might cost. Any “elective” dentistry will be paid for out of your own pocket.
